Pique highlights problem with footballCreates The Kings LeagueSuggests major rule changeWHAT HAPPENED?
Pique, 37, has claimed draws need to be banned if the sport is to keep the attention of the younger generation – who appear more interested in short-form content on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. The former Barcelona man has outlined the issue football currently faces in capturing the attention of the younger generation, after witnessing his children lose interest in games.

Speaking to The Times, the Spaniard highlighted changes he thinks would help the game in the future. “One reason we created the Kings League is I saw my kids watching a football match and after ten minutes they were on their phones and their tablets and watching other things at the same time. Football is entertainment, so it is not just competing with other sports. It competes with Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, TikTok. Everyone has limited time. Football for 90 minutes is not as exciting.”
Talking about the rule change, he added: “You need to find ways to score more goals or that you cannot end a game as a draw. Maybe there are no draws, why not? In baseball and basketball there are no draws. You go to a game and it ends with a draw and the feeling is, ‘Who won?’."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Pique is looking to spearhead changes in football, after creating The Kings League back in 2022. The competition is a seven-a-side football league which differs from the traditional rules of football. These changes include tie-breaker penalty shoot-outs, unlimited substitutions and the use of 'secret weapons' such as the exclusion of an opponent for two-minutes.
lbcWHAT NEXT FOR FOOTBALL?
While it is unlikely that football will implement such radical changes, there are some alterations being discussed within the modern game. Recent suggestions included possible blue cards being used, which would result in players being 'sin binned' for poor conduct, as well as alterations to the use of VAR.
