Aston Villa’s season hasn’t exactly gone to plan, has it?
The Villans spent over £100m in the summer, but they’ve been unable to avoid getting embroiled in a relegation scrap – they currently find themselves two points behind Watford in 17th.
This week has certainly been a big one for football, and while the headlines have been dominated by the suspension of professional matches due to the ongoing pandemic, one story that shouldn’t be forgotten is the uncertainty surrounding Dean Smith’s job.
Indeed, it was reported earlier this week by the Telegraph that a loss to Chelsea would have seen Smith’s position come under serious scrutiny, but now that game isn’t going to be played for at least another few weeks.

However, that doesn’t mean Smith should be out of the woods, and the higher-ups at Villa Park now have a serious decision to make.
With at least three weeks before Villa’s next match, this could be the perfect time for a new manager to come in as they’d have plenty of time to work with their new team in training while the players will also have a chance to get to grips with their new tactics.
Managers often do better when they’re appointed during a break. Smith himself was a great example of this, being appointed on October 10th 2018, halfway through an international break. This gave him 10 days to get to grips with his squad before their next game, and we all know how Villa’s fortunes changed from that point as he led them to promotion that season.
This trend may indicate that the Midlands club’s best chance of succeeding under a new gaffer would be to get them in during this period when the Premier League is halted.
Villa either need to back Smith or get someone else in imminently as they may not get an opportunity like this again.
In other news, Aston Villa fans have been reacting to one huge injury update.
